Our Commitment

As part of the larger Age Friendly initiative, Dementia Friendly Lackawanna’s mission is to provide a positive difference in Lackawanna County for those persons living with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia Friends Lackawanna will deliver the five key messages of the Dementia Friends to reduce stigma and to transform our community to a more inclusive place for those with dementia and their caregivers.

Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the Dementia Friends initiative is underway in Pennsylvania. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects people, each of us can make a difference for people touched by dementia.

Dementia Friendly Pennsylvania provides a wide variety of resources tailored to you. Browse information available to you here!

Want to become a Dementia Friend?

To become a Dementia Friend, you join others in a one-hour Dementia Friends Information Session. The session will cover five key messages about dementia and touch on what it is like to live with dementia. As a Dementia Friend you will turn your understanding into a practical action that can help someone with dementia living in your community. The action can be as big or small as you choose, because every action counts!

Dementia Friendly Dining

Dining out is an important social activity for many people. For those with dementia, however, going out to eat can be stressful and overwhelming. These customers may have special needs and can require additional support to enjoy their dining experiences. While it may occur anywhere from rarely to frequently, restaurant professionals and wait staff are likely to encounter customers with dementia in the course of their work. As a dementia-friendly business, restaurants can provide a higher level of customer service to all members of the community.

The restaurants below have gone the extra mile to create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. From staff trained in dementia awareness to thoughtfully designed menus and spaces that promote comfort and ease, every detail is centered on inclusion, dignity, and community.
